In today\u2019s tutorial, we\u2019re going to show you how to create retrowave-inspired animated artwork with Pixlr<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1. Set your background<\/h3>\n\n\n

Go to Pixlr<\/a>, create an empty artboard and set your background, preferably a dark and plain image. You wouldn\u2019t want your background to look overly busy and attention-grabbing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. Create a gradient sun<\/h3>\n\n\n

To create the sun, we\u2019re using the Shape<\/em> tool and the Gradient Fill <\/em>feature.<\/p>\n\n\n

\"\"<\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n

Now, the gradient sun is the focal point of your piece, so it\u2019s crucial that the colors you choose for your sun are bright and bold. Here, we\u2019re going for a beige, pink, purple and indigo combination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3. Country road, take me home!<\/h3>\n\n\n

The second most important element in a retrowave artwork is the road. Here, we\u2019ve chosen a landscape image of an empty road.<\/p>\n\n\n

\n
\"\"<\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n

We\u2019re going to use our favorite Cutout\/Mask<\/em> tool to remove the mountainous background from the image since we\u2019re planning to only keep the road.<\/p>\n\n\n

\"\"<\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n

We\u2019re using the Magic Mask<\/em> with a 46 tolerance<\/em> to remove large chunks of the mountain.<\/p>\n\n\n

\"\"<\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n

To make sure the cutouts are clean and refined, we\u2019re using the Draw Mask with a soft brush to erase the remaining bits and pieces of the mountain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

4. Let\u2019s go for a drive!<\/h3>\n\n\n

Now that we\u2019ve got a road, we\u2019d just need to add a car! Here, we\u2019ve chosen a landscape image of a car speeding down an empty road.<\/p>\n\n\n

By using the Cutout\/Mask<\/em> tool, we\u2019ve removed the background and retained the car itself. Remember to position the car and adjust its size in a way that makes sense.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

5. Time to color grade!<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Another quintessential aspect of a retrowave artwork is the color! So now, we\u2019re going to do some simple color grading in order to achieve that classic synthwave look.<\/p>\n\n\n

Go to Adjustment<\/em> and click on Curves<\/em>. Here, you\u2019d want to click on the green circle and drag the green anchor point to the right. You\u2019d start seeing a change of color – the road turning from ash gray to vivid purple. <\/p>\n\n\n

Now, apply the same method to the car so that it matches the color of the road.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

6. A splash of neon<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

You can\u2019t possibly have a retrowave artwork without neon signs or elements. Here, we\u2019re going to show you how to create some cool retro-futuristic neon hoops! <\/p>\n\n\n

Click on Shape<\/em> tool and pick a color for your outline. We\u2019re going for a bright purple outline to match the rest of the artwork.<\/p>\n\n\n

Now, go to Fill<\/em> and click on the No Fill<\/em> option – you\u2019d get a hollowed circle with just the purple outline.<\/p>\n\n\n

Right-click on the circle and choose Rasterize Layer<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n

Now that you\u2019ve turned your shape into a layer, you can go to Filter <\/em>and click on Outer Glow<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n

For the Outer Glow<\/em>, we\u2019re going for a fun and flirty pink color. Make sure you adjust the feather and opacity in order to achieve that beautiful neon glow.<\/p>\n\n\n

Now that you\u2019ve got your pink neon hoops, you can easily duplicate them and arrange them along the empty road to create the illusion of your car zooming through a futuristic-looking tunnel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

7. Add some animation<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Finally, time for the fun part – animating your artwork with our easy-to-use Animation tool.<\/p>\n\n\n

Click on the layer you want to animate and go to the Animation<\/em> panel. Here, we want to add a simple Fade animation to our gradient sun. You can adjust the speed and duration of your animation.<\/p>\n\n\n

Here, we\u2019re adding the Grow <\/em>animation to our neon hoops and customizing the Delay<\/em> periods of each hoop. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
